The City of Yakima, The Yakama Nation, Daughters of the American Revolution (a few chapters in WA), George Washington Speaks, Sons of the American Revolution Mid-Columbia Chapter, Spirit of ’76, Yakima Valley Genealogical Society & VFW Post 379 Auxiliary are working together and offering a free, family-friendly event to celebrate our country’s 250th birthday on Saturday, June 13th at Franklin Park. There are many displays, demonstrations, educational talks and activities.
Displays of historical replica objects of the Yakama Nation and colonial life, colonial military & Yakama encampments. Historical educational talks for all ages: on events, politics & formation
of our government, ways of life for children, women, Yakamas, & men of 250 years ago, stories told by Yakamas, the history of our flags, colonial fashion.
Demonstrations of Yakamas drumming & children dancing, colonial-era artillery, fife and drum music, basket making (both colonial and Yakama), beading, lace making, spinning of wool, candle making, how to fold a flag.
Other activities: People wearing period clothing of the east coast and Yakamas of central Washington. Drop site for worn torn flags for proper retirement. Photo op for attendees with George Washington & ohn Hancock characters. Assistance with locating an attendee’s Revolutionary War patriot. American history book sales.
